Anyone ever replaced the tank level indicator in a late model Civic? Asking for a friend...
No, really, it is for a friend of mine, he asked me for my help. I figure I could probably do it but not sure if I need any special tools, or if the ECU needs any special programming to work with the new float.

No idea in terms of how hard it is, but shouldn’t be bad. Most cars have an access port for it/the fuel pump under the rear seat (I know my 2009 Accent does. Should just have to take the rear seat cushion out and open the access port I’d imagine...? Prob no special tools I would think...

Out of curiosity what’s the problem?

I think it’s a 2012, I’ll have to ask him.

Yeah, I’ve done one a long time ago on a truck, we had to drop the whole tank. The car should be easier, just want to make sure I’m not missing anything before I tear into it.

His gas gauge is erratic. If you fill the car up it works fine till it gets to half a tank, then the gauge starts jumping erratically, until it’s a tick above empty.

Autozone has some intructional guides for tools.
My gauge would go all random after 1/2 and there had been a bunch of gas residue so the float was sticking. Bunch of carb cleaner and worked just fine.

Interesting. Maybe I’ll suggest he throw some carb cleaner in there and see what happens before we start tearing shit apart.

I should specify I removed the level float fro the tank first before spraying

Ahh, I see. Well the biggest concern I have is getting the tank open at this point. He did a bit more looking and apparently Honda has a special wrench you’re supposed to use to open the gas tank, and there are some tamper tabs or something you risk breaking off if you don’t use it and then it won’t go back together right. This may end up being a problem for the dealership to solve.
